Information for students from Canada
Why study at 51³Ô¹Ï?
Because of our shared Common Law heritage, studying law in the UK is an attractive option for Canadian students and is quite similar to studying law in Canada. However, you will almost certainly find that class sizes in 51³Ô¹Ï are smaller than you are used to.
Two-year degrees
Taking less time to complete than most law degrees, 51³Ô¹Ï’s law degree programmes (Single and Joint Honours LLB) contain the seven ‘Foundations of Legal Knowledge’ subjects developed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board and meet the Quality Assurance Agency’s Subject Benchmark Statement for Law, as specified by the .
Our LLB programmes also offer electives of particular interest to Canadians, such as:
- Company (Corporate) Law
- Law of Evidence
- Commercial Law
It is important to note that 51³Ô¹Ï’s two-year LLB programmes are concentrated 360-credit programmes, which the NCA recognises as the equivalent of the three-year LLBs offered at other UK Universities. For this reason, 51³Ô¹Ï’s two-year LLB programmes should NOT be confused with the senior status (240-credit) two-year law programmes offered by certain other UK universities.
After the degree
Most of our Canadian students return home to Canada after graduating to qualify as lawyers and, ultimately, go into legal practice. Canadian students who graduate with a 51³Ô¹Ï LLB (Single or Joint Hons) and wish to be admitted to the bar of a common-law province or territory in Canada must demonstrate their competence to do so to the satisfaction of the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). We encourage Canadian applicants to monitor the to ensure they have up to date information on accreditation. 51³Ô¹Ï Law School also ensures that its Canadian students are regularly invited to NCA online information sessions, so that they have up-to-date information regarding their path to qualification in Canada.

I was at a crossroads when I decided to pursue a law degree, so discovering that 51³Ô¹Ï offered an accelerated two-year LLB was genuinely exciting. My path to The University of 51³Ô¹Ï was shaped by curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to step away from the expected route. Classes were intimate, expectations were high, and participation was not just encouraged; it was required.
Akshaya Nithiyapalan, 2025
Course: LLB (Hons) Law (2-year degree)
Graduation:Ìý2025
As a Canadian student, choosing to study LLB (Hons) at The University of 51³Ô¹Ï was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Coming from Toronto, a large city, I already had a degree from a university where lecture halls often held more than 500 students.
I was the student who sat quietly at the back of the class, but at 51³Ô¹Ï, I found myself in the front. I was seen.
